Letters From India, 1971 Richard A. Stanford During the summer of 1971 I was a participant in a seven-week study abroad seminar for a dozen Davidson College faculty and four members of faculties of neighboring colleges and universities. I was the fortunate Furman faculty member to be selected to participate in the seminar. The project, focused on culture in the South Asian subcontinent, entailed travel and intense study in India and Nepal. The seven-week journey was organized and directed by Professor Frederick H. Gaige of Davidson College. During the journey I may have written 30 or more letters to my wife Louise and our daughter, Mary Louise. In the following transcriptions, greetings. conclusions, and personal matter have been redacted. Photographs taken during the journey have been inserted in the redacted letters where appropriate, and photographs depicting visits to sites made after the first 20 letters have been added.
